Cloud Storage Reviews : Cloud-Based Backup Continues to Gain Favor with Small to Medium Sized Businesses

February 27, 2012

Last week, Forrester Research released a report titled “Cloud-Based Backup Gaining Favor with SMBs: Report”, which once again confirms that SMBs are moving to the cloud in droves. Cloud backup software as a service and off site data centers are great for the SMBs.   Employing cloud backup services in their businesses allow them to invest in their core competency, rather than their IT services for internal stakeholders.

Why are SMBs moving to the cloud?

The number one reason SMBs are moving to the cloud is data security. They are comfortable with the new environment and the safety it can provide to their data.

A secondary, though still important, reason for moving to the cloud is speed of implementation and deployment. The SOS ServerSave business backup solution can take as little as 10 minutes for a professional to install and prepare to back up a server. Getting backup processes up and running for an entire business truly is simple.

Growth opportunities for MSPs

Managed service providers selling backup solutions, like the SOS 360 Degree Partner Program, are well-poised to take advantage of this move to the cloud. MSPs are in a position to create complete disaster recovery plans, which include regular maintenance and automatically scheduled back ups. It is cost efficient for the SMB to outsource this work to a managed service provider that isn’t on staff, but is well-trained in data backup and disaster recovery.

Automatic backup is key

The Forrester Research report also highlights the fact that automatic backup is extremely important to cloud backup plans. Humans are inherently forgetful and bad at remembering to do backups at a specific time. It’s always best to employ backup software, like SOS Online Backup, that allows IT managers and MSPs to schedule backups hourly, daily, and weekly.

Kind Attention Cloud Backup Partners / Resellers / MSPs – Revenue from Cloud Services to Reach $55.5 Billion : IT World

January 18, 2012

Cloud backup is popular. There is no doubt about it. Many IT professionals out there are keenly aware of why the cloud backup is so popular.

  • Storage costs are becoming less and less expensive
  • Internet bandwidth and accessibility is improving
  • Understanding of cloud security is improving
  • Tape backup is similar in cost, or more expensive, and less advantageous
To illustrate this point, just look at the numbers put forth by IDC and ITworld.com.
Worldwide revenue from cloud services is expected to reach $55.5 billion in 2014, according to IDC. With a compound annual growth rate of 27.4%, the cloud is set for quite a trajectory.

Today, ITworld.com republished an article by CFOworld.com on the looming cloud backup decision for CFOs: is it more cost-effective to expand an internal data center? Or go to the cloud?

Depending on what your business needs are, the factors for making the decision vary widely. Though no one can discount the value of cloud backup and it’s capacity to decrease administrative costs, while being secure.

CFOs are at the apex when it comes to pulling interests of software-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service, platform-as-a-service and other cloud strategies vs. maintaining servers, switches and storage under the organization’s roof….Manage too much in-house and you’ll strain your staff, infrastructure and budget.

As a managed service provider, or business owner, ask yourself about the benefits you can experience from cloud storage. Consider that it’s pretty handy to have your data center backed up as well.

The Laundry List – Why Online Backup? : Online Backup Solution for Business Productivity in 2012

January 12, 2012

Managed services are the key to keeping your customer happy as a reseller.  Let’s take the easiest service to provide and discuss some of the benefits, both obvious and less obvious as selling points when you approach your customers.

Online Backup Service

The quickest and easiest managed service to provide your customers is Online Backup Service.  You can lower a company’s backup Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by moving their backups online.  Here is a laundry list of selling points I use to convince my clients of what I already know; online backup is the way to go.

Benefits of Online Backup

  • True Disaster-Proofing – Traditional backups are done onsite and are susceptible to the same disasters that require a backup in the first place.  A catastrophic event at the office such as fire or flood will wipe away backups along with the original data.  Cloud backup provides offsite storage as a first line of defense.
  • Cost Savings – Total Cost of Ownership of an online backup solution is generally lower.  Without the outlay of new backup media, software licensing and maintenance fees, the monthly charges for an online backup service remain a consistent and stable charge for the organization
  • Versioning – Most online backup providers offer different retention policies that allow you to keep multiple versions of your files.  With traditional backup methods, once a corrupted file has been backed up, the uncorrupted version may be gone forever.
  • Restore From Anywhere to Anywhere – With traditional backup, you have to be onsite to load the correct media, unless your company is large enough to have a library system.  With online backup, one file can be restored by the user, from any location in the world.
  • Lower Administrative Costs – Most traditional backups require some intervention by a user, whether it is swapping tapes or carrying media offsite in a rotation.  Intervention takes time and that adds an additional level of cost to the backup procedure.  By storing data offsite in the first place, these costs are eliminated.
  • Monitoring – Online backup is easily monitored.  As a reseller, you may choose to receive the notification emails and only work with your client when there are failures.  This opens another line of communication to the client and the client will benefit from the proactive nature of the monitoring.

Let’s start the new year off right with your customers by moving to a managed services model.  Will a little work, the next backup solution you install may carry your favorite brand name.  Yours.
